Back to School

Almost 20 years ago I made a decision to marry my wonderful husband instead of of finish my degree in public relations at Oklahoma Baptist University. I never regretted my decision to marry Kurtis, however my decision to leave school has always disappointed me. Until now.

Last fall I returned to school after a 17 year hiatus. It was tougher than I thought mainly because I was tough on myself to perform much better than I did when I was a young college student. I did.

I wanted to really learn this time. I didn't want to just memorize information for a test but actually gain knowledge. I am a firm believer that education is wasted on the young after this last semester in college. I thrive for knowledge. I couldn't wait for the next assignment to come. As I anticipate this next semester, I can't wait to receive the big thick text book I ordered yesterday. When it comes I know I will crack it open and look through it excited for my first reading assignment.

What I do know is that I won't quit this time. The man I dropped out of school to marry 17 years ago will see to that and for that I am extremely grateful.

Toy Story...Life Story

I have recently been overwhelmed by the process known as "parenthood". Watching my children become young adults...adolescents. It became everso apparent yesterday while watching Toy Story 3 with Paige and Grant. But especially, Grant.

Grant was especially interested in Toy Story when he was about 2. He had a Woody and a Buzz toy he played with often. He actually called Woody, "Goody" and dressed up as "Goody" for Halloween when he was two. He loved Goody. When Toy Story 2 came out Kurtis and I decided to take him to the movies to see it on the big screen. We took him to the theater, bought him a popcorn bucket bigger than his little head and took him to his giant chair that he couldn't even hold down with his own weight. He sat perfectly still and in awe as he watched his pals Goody and Buzz in their new adventure.

Flash forward eleven years to yesterday. I had Grant sitting on my right and a little two year old boy on my left. I didn't know this little boy on the left but I instantly flashed back to the day we took Grant to see Goody and Buzz.

Then the movie started. Andy has grown up. He is going off to college. Giving away his toys. Just this week, Grant and I prepared many of his toys to give away to charity in preparation for our move. One of the ones who stayed....Yip, Goody. Andy only chose one of his toys to keep. Woody.

About that time, I had the worst allergy attack right there in the movie theater. Oh, ok. I cried. What a beautiful picture of what really is happening in my life with my kiddos. They are growing into young adults but at the same time, holding on to the things they find special and I hope and pray that Kurtis and I have taught them some things that they will chose to never give away and always hold dear to them.

Teenagers!

My sweet little children used to be so cute! They used to love me and sit in my lap and we could read for hours. They used to beg me to go to the zoo or to walk around the neighborhood with them.

Now...

They are learning to drive, flying across the country to visit friends, making decisions that effect the rest of their lives, becoming who they are going to be and I pray I don't screw it up.

$54,000

Paige handed me a paper she wrote in school recently. Her instructions were to tell how she would spend $54,000 in prize money she was given if she had won the Nobel Peace Prize as Martin Luther King, Jr. did in 1964. MLK, Jr. donated his money to the civil rights movement.

Here is Paige's paper in her own words and her own spelling:

I would donate $45,000 dollars to a nursing home. Because my Papa was in the Nursing home. I would donate the money so that they can make medicine for people who have had Alstimers for a long time. I hope that they do make that kind of Medicine.

I would also donate $5,000 dollars to charity so they can get more food and clothing for the poor people and get them familys and so they can live Better.

I would also donate $5,000 dollars to people with cancer so that they can make medicine for these people.
